Being a twin isn’t all that bad, nor is it all that good. Being the fat twin makes things a little worse. Seventeen year old, Jessa Shelby has been all but ignored. Trimmed down, but not skinny like her sister, she has decided to make her mark in her final year in high school. Things begin anew the summer before her senior year when she makes friends with Ethan Hart, a boy with a twisted past, and Allie, his near celebrity status girlfriend, while taking pictures with her new prized possession. Hanging out with them opened her eyes to a lot of new possibilities including Josh Macon, whom she’s secretly crushed on all through high school. No longer the ‘fat girl’, Josh now seems interested in her too. Long before the day comes to graduate, Jessa finds herself gasping for air. With her vision clouded from tears born of pain as the straps from her precious camera tighten around her throat, clarity sets in. They say that just before you die your life flashes before your eyes. And on the threshold of death claiming her, she finds that partially true. Her flash begins as if to explain just how she ended up on Death’s door. With mere moments left, she has to wonder if trust had come at a very high price.

First I would like to say that I will read anything by Shannon Dermott!I was intrigued from the prologue. I absolutely love Shannon Dermott's Cambion Series and couldn't wait to see what she was going to do with her newest novel, Through the Lens.
So much about this story really hit home. I loved the emphasis on Jessa's struggle with her weight. So many girls go through this at some point in their lives, feeling like the fat friend (including myself). I especially loved that while Jessa was aware of her weight and worked hard to keep it off, she didn't spend an excessive amount of time obsessing over it. In a way she inspired me to keep working out hard.

When we first meet Ethan, he doesn't say much but he exudes this confidence and charisma that makes him appealing on many levels. I want to know his secrets and I want to know him on oh, so many delicious levels! He's strong, sexy, mysterious, and gorgeous but holy cow is he a man whore! Normally this is a big turn off but he makes it seem like it's ok. I love how he's always there to rescue Jessa when she needs it and even when she doesn't. He really is her knight in shining armor. I can see what he sees in Jessa though. She's innocent, understanding, and compassionate and those are things Ethan really needs especially when dealing with his painful and haunted past. He has a sensitive injured side and Jessa is exactly what he needs to help him heal.
I also felt like I was flashing back to high school with the wild unchaperoned parties full of underage drinkers and sexual tension! I can relate to Jessa not only through her struggle with her weight but also her rapidly developing skill with a camera as well as living a secret life. I was a good girl, the one my parents trusted and never questioned, but I'll admit that I told lies and crossed a few boundaries in my youth. Luckily my discretion's were never discovered!
This was a very sweet and realistic story. I loved the characters and their relationships with each other. I also, for the most part, liked the ending. What I didn't like was the realism in the end. I want Ethan and Jessa to stay together always but the possibility of growing apart is always there, especially when attending two different schools. I'm content in my world where they live happily ever after. :) I don't want a follow on story because in my mind Ethan and Jessa do stay together! That being said, a little birdie told me that Ethan's POV is in the works and I can't wait!! ;)

Through the Lens Shannon Dermott 9781481084314 Books Reviews
Loved the 1st paragraph of the story's description & the cover of this book so I wanted to give it a try. Then just being prologue deep I knew I'd like the book. The author definitely has talent.
Jessa has never quite measured up physically to her thin beautiful twin sister. But after months of running and dieting she's lost weight and is hopeful to have a great senior year of HS. And maybe even catch the eye of her long time crush Josh.... or this new mystery guy Ethan. This is what I was thinking the story was mainly about.... the journey she takes to become a stronger, more secure version of herself. Oh but what a surprise as this story is quite a bit more than just that! There's a mystery element that will leave you wanting to read more. And it's not a light fluffy read. There's an underlying darkness in quite a few parts.
I loved other characters in the book!! Madison and Bradley. Jessa's mom and dad. And even her younger brother. They added great depth to the story.
The author did a great job writing chemistry between Ethan and Jessa so that you'd be interested to read what their story would be. You slowly get clued into Ethan's life you want to find out MORE.
Now I love anticipation. That time in a story where you watch two characters that are attracted to each other figure out who's gonna admit it first and under what circumstances they'll get together. And this story definitely has anticipation. Maybe a little too much. Or maybe it's just my impatience, but I would be reading, almost wanting to skim through pages while thinking "Get together already!!!!!" I was at about 73% when there started to be some substance to their relationship. And I was starting to get a little peeved with Ethan's man whore ways. Alright, he likes to bump uglies with skanks. Got it. I was ready for some depth to his character.
And yay that my patience was rewarded and we got to see a whole different side to Ethan. The one that makes you swoon. )
There's only one other thing I would have loved a little more. While I did laugh out a few times in the book, I would have loved to have seen more flirtatious dialogue between J & E. A couple times I would wonder what he (and Josh) saw in her besides just beauty. Because she was very shy with boys. She became a stronger person through out the story and more outspoken which I loved, but even then she was just straight forward with her dialogue. I'm thinking seeing her be funny with him would have helped build the depth of their relationship. But that's just me. And I'm not a writer. So I'm sure it's easier said than done. )
All in all this book is definitely worth a read!
